September 6, 2016 – Agile Networks to Expand into the State of Indiana

Agile Networks Announces Agreement for Asset License in Indiana

Canton, OH – Agile Networks (Agile) announced today, along with Governor Mike Pence, that negotiations have been finalized on a public-private agreement that will license the state of Indiana’s communications infrastructure to Agile. This includes hundreds of traditional and non-traditional vertical assets, fiber optic cables, and streamlined right-of-way access. The Indiana Finance Authority (IFA) board approved the agreement this morning, pending review by the state’s legislative budget committee.

“Indiana is a national leader in partnerships that deliver sound financial returns and long-term benefits to Hoosiers,” said Governor Pence. Agile echoes the enthusiasm that this agreement will put underused assets throughout the state into full play and enhance Indiana’s communication capabilities.

Agile is providing an innovative approach that will empower telecom participants to utilize assets previously inaccessible. By making an investment to unify Indiana’s existing infrastructure and assets, Agile will establish a statewide network that will transform broadband access throughout Indiana, including rural areas.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the state’s communication infrastructure fully utilized, and Agile has demonstrated through the proposal process that it has the experience and expertise to do that,” said Dan Huge, Director of the Indiana Finance Authority. “With a qualified firm driving the management, operation, and marketing of the state’s communication infrastructure, Indiana stands to gain significantly upfront and in the long-term for our rural communities and economic-development efforts.”

Agile has a history of success in working with the public and private sectors to significantly increase broadband availability. The Agile Network is a hybrid network that, in partnership with asset owners, brings together wireless and fiber technologies to enhance asset value through investment and innovation, and provide an integrated “Pipe Power Tower” solution. This expansion will allow telecommunications and infrastructure providers to take advantage of Agile’s open access model, making it easy for wireless and other providers to enter new urban and rural markets in Indiana.

“This expansion will enhance broadband service as Agile Networks’ open access model will give wireless carriers and providers the ability to easily enter new urban and rural markets,” said Micah Vincent, Director of the Indiana Office of Management and Budget. “The impact of significantly increasing broadband availability in underserved areas will facilitate economic development, increase educational learning and telemedicine opportunities, increase growth for rural businesses, advance agricultural technologies, and provide reliable broadband for residents.”

“Agile Networks is looking forward to working with Indiana to make telecom assets within the Hoosier state fully accessible and ready for use by the public and private sectors,” says Kyle Quillen, founder and CTO of Agile Networks. “This will accelerate the advancement of Indiana’s infrastructure and position the state as a telecom policy leader.”

Agile will be announcing specifics of the expansion soon.

Agile Networks Deploys RADWIN 5000 Jet PtMP Across Entire Mission Critical Networkn

Tel Aviv, Israel – RADWIN, the global sub-6 GHz broadband wireless leader, today announced that Agile Networks has deployed the RADWIN 5000 JET Point-to-Multipoint with Beam-Forming antenna technology. A long-standing RADWIN customer, Agile Networks is a premier telecom provider operating a hybrid fiber-wireless network in 88 counties throughout Ohio, North America. Since 2014, Agile Networks has deployed nearly 700 RADWIN 5000 Point-to-Multipoint and RADWIN 2000 Point-to-Point wireless links for backhaul and access. RADWIN 5000 JET is the latest addition to Agile’s rapidly expanding network which serves enterprises, government, oil & gas and public safety agencies.

Kyle Quillen, Founder and CTO, Agile Networks: “The Agile Network supports mission-critical public safety communications so it is vital that the network is rock-stable and operational in any condition. First-responders such as Police and Fire departments across the state depend on our network to perform in every situation regardless of adverse weather or non-line-of-sight conditions. RADWIN 5000 JET consistently outperforms all other vendor equipment and delivers the fiber-grade service that we guarantee our customers.”

Steve Merriman, Director of Network Services, Agile Networks: “RADWIN 5000 JET effectively overcomes radio interference as a result of its smart Beam-Forming antenna and also offers great spectral efficiency, reducing the amount of spectrum needed for our deployments. Due to JET’s small form factor our tower costs are reduced, enabling us to realize significant operational cost savings. There’s also great value for us in the fact that JET is backward compatible with the existing RADWIN 5000 install base. As we continue to expand we’re looking to standardize RADWIN 5000 JET across our entire network.”

Dennis Stipati, RADWIN’s General Manager, North America: “One of our key goals is to grow with our customers by continuously bringing to market innovative solutions. Today RADWIN is uniquely poised to fulfill the needs of forward-looking telecom providers with its complete portfolio of solutions. We are excited to partner with Agile Networks as they expand their network and drive wireless broadband connectivity throughout the state of Ohio and beyond.”

March 30, 2016 – ‘The Wilds’ Safari Park in Ohio Deploys RADWIN’s Wireless Mobility Network Across 9000 Acre Park

‘The Wilds’ Safari Park in Ohio Deploys RADWIN’s Wireless Mobility Network Across 9000 Acre Park

RADWIN’S FiberinMotion® mobility solution delivers high-capacity connectivity enabling real-time animal diagnosis and treatment & enhancing visitors’ experience.

Tel Aviv, Israel – RADWIN today announced that it was chosen by THE WILDS Safari Park & Conservation Center in Cumberland, Ohio, U.S. – home to rare and endangered species from around the globe. RADWIN D+ point-to-point and FiberinMotion® mobility solutions were deployed across the 9,000-acre safari park to provide wireless connectivity to THE WILD’s operational vehicles and tour buses. Agile Networks was in charge of network build-up; Winncom Technologies is the distributor.

Dr. Jan Ramer, Director of Conservation Medicine, THE WILDS: “There was almost non-existent coverage in the park before we deployed RADWIN, so we had to rely on two-way radios and a plodding internet connection in the offices. If staff treating animals in the field wanted to consult with offsite experts they would have to take a picture, download the picture, make it smaller, email it, wait for something to come back. An ineffective, time-consuming process. Following the launch of the RADWIN-based wireless mobility network we can send real-time video of the animals in the field to off-site consultants who can give us their expert advice. We’ve also managed to enhance the visitors’ experience; now that there’s high-speed connectivity on the open tour buses, visitors can share their experiences in real-time and post updates on their social media accounts.”

Kyle Quillen, CTO, Agile Networks: “With RADWIN we were able to establish a robust wireless network providing 150 Mbps capacity to cover such a wide area. RADWIN’s FiberinMotion® mobility solution essentially light-ups an entire area with connectivity for mobile and Wi-Fi devices as well as mobile payment systems – and really enhances a lot of the different operations at THE WILDS.”

Dennis Stipati, GM, RADWIN U.S: “We are proud to take part of a project that enables animals to live in open range natural habitats. With the RADWIN FiberinMotion® mobility solution and PtMP and PtP equipment, enterprises and organizations across all verticals can establish communications when and where they need it in the fastest, most cost-effective way.

July 10th, 2015 – Agile Networks Establishes Statewide Network

Agile Networks Establishes Statewide Network

Canton, OH – Agile Networks (Agile) is excited to announce that The Agile Network now stands as the only statewide open access 1 Gigabit backhaul network offering Last Mile Agility. The Agile Network is a hybrid fiber wireless backhaul network that allows Agile to deliver fiber-grade connectivity with the latest in wireless technologies. Consisting of over 270 towers throughout Ohio and a presence in all 88 counties, The Agile Network delivers high-speed service to rural as well as metropolitan markets at a reliability that exceeds the most stringent industry performance requirements.

“Having a statewide network that can deliver broadband connectivity throughout Ohio including hard to reach rural communities is what we have been working towards,” says Kyle Quillen, Chief Technical Officer and Founder of Agile Networks. “The inclusive nature of our approach has allowed us to rapidly bring together disparate resources to transform telecommunications for Public Safety here in Ohio. Our approach offers a tremendous advantage in speed to deployment, reliability, and performance; which are especially beneficial to customers requiring multi-location connectivity such as government, oil and gas, and mobile carriers. Our transformation of the telecom industry will continue in Ohio as well as in other states as we expand The Agile Network to support their needs.”

The open access nature of The Agile Network enables integration with other telecom providers to assist them in servicing their customers and is versatile for any application and data transport requirement. M3 Midstream LLC (“Momentum”), an energy company that serves oil and gas producers, recently constructed multi-billion dollar natural gas refining plants across multiple locations throughout southeast Ohio. The construction produced state-of-the-art facilities but the rural landscape was unable to offer the necessary telecom infrastructure to support their multi-location operation. Agile provided a solution for their operation by leveraging The Agile Network and Momentum was able to benefit from the fiber-grade wireless network that now connects their Ohio locations in Scio, Kensington, Leesville, and Salineville as well as Momentum’s home office in Durango, Colorado.

“Every time Agile gets a call to action they exceed our expectations and performance requirements,” says Joe Giles, Vice President of Operations for M3 Midstream LLC. “This allows us to focus on our core business of providing flexible, responsive, and reliable midstream services linking the wellhead to the market.” The contribution of efficient connectivity that Agile provides was paramount in making the operation a success. As of today, access controls, security, and surveillance at Momentum’s facilities are supported through the network.

The Agile Network serves as an opportunity for organizations to place their efforts and resources into what is most important for their success while knowing that Agile is focused on the connectivity required to maintain their operations. Old Forge Services, a company based in Mogadore, Ohio, found themselves in a new facility with no high speed broadband available. Theresa Eubanks, President of Old Forge Services, was introduced to Agile and a cost effective solution was executed.

“People underestimate the effect good connectivity can have on a business,” said Eubanks. “Agile solved a problem for us that nobody else was able to. We really appreciate what they’ve done here at Old Forge.” Agile was able to build a monopole on Old Forge’s property to extend the benefits of the network to their operation in rural Ohio. With the appropriate connectivity, Old Forge has been able to expand their business how they envisioned with ample bandwidth to support their phones, Internet, and an IP based security system.

Agile brings the only solution to the marketplace that offers flexible and reliable connectivity that is available to transport data through statewide backhaul at 1 Gig speed. Public Safety, national carriers, businesses, and underserved communities now have access to the benefits of The Agile Network while experiencing considerable savings, efficient communications, and reliability of service. The 911 Operations in Gallia County, Ohio – located in rural southeast Ohio – serves as the perfect example of a partner who has benefited from the statewide network.

“The people at Agile are great to work with,” said Keith Wilson, Deputy Director of Gallia County 911. “They brought us a unique solution when nobody else could, and the improvement in the quality of the service was immediately noticeable. We couldn’t be happier.”

About Agile Networks:

Agile Networks is the premier provider of hybrid transport networks by bringing together fiber and wireless assets, supplying connectivity to empower individuals and transform organizations. Canton, OH – Agile Networks, a telecommunications services company headquartered in Canton, Ohio, announced today that representatives of the company will attend ShaleComm East Exposition June 24 – 25, 2014 at the Marriott City Center, 112 Washington Place, Pittsburgh, PA.

Agile Networks, the premier provider of hybrid fiber wireless broadband data networks, provides connectivity to empower individuals and transform organizations. Agile’s “Last-Mile Agility” makes delivering solutions to rural areas just as feasible as major cities, making the company the perfect choice for connectivity in the oil and gas industry. Agile solves connectivity, security and surveillance problems throughout the oil and gas region.

Just last year, Agile Networks helped Midstream M3 (Momentum) achieve seamless communication among its Ohio plants.

“Momentum had constructed a multi-billion dollar natural gas refining plant with multiple locations throughout southeastern Ohio, however, the rural landscape did not offer the necessary IT infrastructure to support the plant,” said Kyle Quillen, Agile Networks Chief Technical Officer.

Momentum relies on technology to track pumps, pipelines, storage containers and more. An interruption in this technology could cost Momentum thousands of dollars per minute. The company tasked Agile with creating a solution to support these vital systems.

“Agile’s solutions for Momentum provide a perfect example of Agile’s ability to engineer a project to best fit a company’s environment,” said Quillen. “In Momentum’s case, Agile’s delivery did not stop with connectivity. Once connected, Momentum saw the opportunities Agile could provide to transform the organization into the one it was meant to be.”

December 2012 – Agile Networks Commences Broadband Transformation across Ohio

Agile Networks Commences Broadband Transformation across Ohio

December 2012

Agile Networks, a telecommunications services company headquartered in Canton, Ohio, announced today that its rollout of a statewide data network has completed deployments in Canton, Cleveland and Columbus, and that those markets are now “live” with their service. The Agile Network combines fiber and 4G wireless for business, residential and government clients.
The Network is in many ways an economic development project for Ohio. The 3-city rollout covers over 2,200 community anchors (such as libraries, hospitals and government locations), over 40,000 businesses and 380,000 homes. Once complete in 2014, the utility will cover over 3 million address points, including over 100,000 homes in Ohio that do not currently have access to broadband.

“We believe in broadband as an economic development driver, because we’ve seen firsthand what it can do for communities that have gone without,” said Kyle Quillen, Agile’s chief technology officer. “But that’s not a problem in these first three markets; the residential coverage here is strong. The value we bring to Canton, Cleveland and Columbus is in delivering carrier class services to government and businesses. The Agile Network is an ideal solution for small- to medium-sized companies that are looking for alternatives to traditional business class solutions like T-1 lines.”

The design and engineering phase of this new infrastructure began in the spring of 2011. By spring of 2012, the company had successfully executed its Columbus pilot and crafted a Master Service Agreement with the State of Ohio to deliver carrier class Ethernet services to both state and local government locations.

In June of 2012, the company made its first public announcement of its privately funded statewide build-out during a panel discussion at the annual Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) conference in Dallas, TX. By the end of October, it had completed its network core build-out, which was needed to support the statewide network and was ready to deploy its initial markets.

The Network can deliver large connections (all the way up to 1Gbps) without the cost and lengthy cycle time of digging new landlines. Quillen added that, “large organizations with multiple locations will find enormous efficiencies on The Agile Network, in both rural and urban markets.”

The challenge in 2013 will be rolling the network out to communities that need it most. The company is attending and exhibiting at the annual County Commissioners Association of Ohio and County Engineers Association of Ohio Conference in Columbus on December 10 and 11.

As part of engaging local communities, Agile plans to work closely with Wholesale Carrier and Wireless ISP partners so it can provide them with wholesale data transport and last mile connectivity services. This will allow communities to ultimately expand their coverage footprint in their select markets.

November 14, 2012 – Claymont grads to build statewide wireless network

Claymont grads to build statewide wireless network

Submitted by Agile Networks on Wed, 11/14/2012 – 11:20am

CANTON – Two Claymont High School graduates are spearheading a project to build a statewide network to bring wireless broadband Internet access to residents, businesses and government agencies throughout Ohio.

“A lot of companies are taking a county-by-county approach. We’re building statewide to benefit everybody, from Appalachia to big cities,” said Bob Brick, a 1979 Claymont graduate in Uhrichsville, who is president and CEO of Agile Network Builders, a telecommunications services company in Canton.

“It’s the first comprehensive project like this in the country,” added Kyle Quillen, a 2003 graduate who serves as the company’s chief technology officer.

Both are founders of the company, along with Mark Dowd of Massillon.

The Agile Network will cover more than 3 million address points across the state, including more than 100,000 homes that do not have access to broadband today.
In a press release, the company stated its goals:

“This initiative aims to drive economic development, update the state’s public safety infrastructure and reduce telecommunications costs for local and state governments across Ohio. It will provide the infrastructure to better connect residents, businesses and government locations, as well as provide open access for telecom service providers throughout the state.”
In many cases, The Agile Network will use existing infrastructure, including MARCS (Multi-Agency Radio Communication System) emergency communications towers owned by the state.
“We’re using a lot of existing assets and bringing value to them by using them in a new way,” Brick said.

Initial deployment of the network will begin this fall in five cities — Cleveland, Columbus, Akron, Toledo and Dayton — as well as southeastern Ohio, the region of the state with the least access to broadband.

“This will level the playing field for those companies in Appalachia that can’t get access to broadband,” Brick said.

The privately funded project will take 12 to 18 months to complete. “That’s an aggressive timeline by most standards, but we’re very passionate about bridging the broadband gap here in Ohio and subsequently in other states across the country,” Brick said.

The network will have many uses, including monitoring wetlands, electric grids, highways and oil rigs. “There are a lot of applications to the network,” he said.
Quillen, who lives in New Philadelphia, had always been interested in starting his own company.

He attended Kent State University at Tuscarawas in New Philadelphia, but never earned a college degree. “I have a bachelor’s degree from the school of hard knocks,” Quillen said.
While working as chief technology officer for Lightspeed Wireless in Berlin, Quillen had the opportunity to work on a project that serves as a case study of what Agile Network Builders hopes to do statewide.

In 2007, the owner of Pearl Valley Cheese in Fresno approached Coshocton County commissioners about getting broadband service. Commissioners teamed with Lightspeed to bring wireless broadband to rural areas of the county, deploying Lightspeed’s equipment on water towers, television and radio towers, silos and MARCS towers.

While working on the project, Quillen came up with the idea of starting his own company. In late 2009, he asked Bob Brick, a family friend, to join him.

Brick, who has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron and a master’s from Johns Hopkins University in computer science, had spent most of his career working as a computer programmer and technology consultant in the southeastern United States. He currently lives in Charlotte, N.C.

They started the company working out of their homes, but eventually took an office in Massillon. They moved to Canton about a year ago.

Of the company’s 12 employees, six are from Tuscarawas County.

“I’m the only person in the company who doesn’t live in Ohio,” said Brick, who commutes weekly to Canton. “We’ve always stayed close to our Ohio roots. All of my family is still here.”
The company foresees employing up to 75 people by next year.

Brick anticipates good things for the state when The Agile Network is complete. “This project will make Ohio a leader in infrastructure and broadband development,” he said.

CTO Interview: Behind Agile Networks’ Statewide Wireless Ohio Network

Submitted by Agile Networks on Wed, 11/14/2012 – 10:46am

A statewide network under construction in Ohio aims to make broadband available to more than three million locations, including 100,000 homes that cannot currently get broadband – without relying on any funding from the broadband stimulus program or the Universal Service fund.

“It’s all funded via private capital,” said Kyle Quillen, chief technology officer for Agile Networks, the company that is building the open access network, in an interview.

How does Agile expect to see a business case for the network when some other service providers have not been able to do that in other rural areas? This may be possible, in part, because the company is serving some more densely populated areas as well as more rural areas.

In addition, as Quillen explained, “We’re leveraging investments that have already been made in vertical assets.” The Agile network will rely heavily on fixed or nomadic wireless technology and the company has been able to use a large number of existing tower sites.

“Public safety has become our anchor tenant,” explained Quillen – and as a result Agile has been able to gain access to existing public safety towers, as well as some commercial towers.

Some readers might be surprised to hear about wireless technology being used for public safety, as wireless service traditionally has been less reliable than wired alternatives. But Quillen argued that if a wireless network is properly engineered, it can be reliable enough to meet the needs of public safety.

The Agile Network will have 350 communication sites and 60 aggregation sites, at which wireless traffic will be shifted to fiber networks. Service to customers will be delivered over point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless equipment from Cambium Networks using a combination of licensed and unlicensed frequencies. Microwave will be used to transport traffic from wireless base stations to the network aggregation points.

“All of the microwave hops are designed [to provide] up to a gigabit of transport using standard microwave frequencies,” Quillen said.

When I asked Quillen what impact bad weather would have on the wireless portion of the Agile Network, he pointed to Agile’s use of multi-service routers from Tellabs that will be installed at each of the communication and aggregation sites and will be able to redirect traffic as needed to route around problem areas.

“Every tower will have an eastbound and westbound microwave path,” said Quillen. Using this approach, the towers will essentially be installed in a ring, which will have fiber injection points on both the eastbound and westbound links.

Quillen noted that the Agile network was already carrying public safety traffic during a big storm that hit Ohio this summer and “never lost a frame or dropped a packet.”
Agile has been talking to competitive and incumbent local exchange carriers and data center operators and Quillen expects many of them to be wholesale customers.

“One thing everyone needs is bandwidth,” said Quillen.

In some cases Agile’s carrier customer will install the customer premises equipment for the customer. In other cases, Agile will handle that responsibility. If there are any remote areas where another carrier doesn’t step in to provide service, Agile will act as the retail operator in those areas, Quillen said.

Naperville, IL — When you call 911 in an emergency, first responders need communication networks that quickly and reliably deliver critical information. That’s why Tellabs and Agile Networks teamed up to build a state-of-the-art broadband infrastructure that supports emergency and other vital communication services in the state of Ohio.

The wireless broadband network will provide the state and its municipalities with high-speed broadband coverage. In addition to emergency services, the network will enable innovations such as video monitoring and surveillance and smart grid management. It will also deliver wireless high-speed Internet services to more than 3 million residences and businesses, including many currently underserved rural locations.

The key benefits of the new network include:

  • improved reliability to ensure high-quality communication channels
  • low latency to limit the delay of information delivery, especially in emergency situations
  • crucial redundancy to provide back-up communication channels in case of interruptions
  • efficient cost-savings due to the elimination of leased T1 lines to help taxpayers save money.

“The reliability, reach and capacity of this network will provide a high-speed backbone for economic development and innovation, such as smart fields for oil and gas monitoring,” said Dan Kelly, executive vice president, global products at Tellabs. “The network will help Ohio maintain its existing services while adding new offerings such as IP VPN and MPLS.”

The network, a combination of microwave and fiber-optics links, uses the Tellabs 8600 System to build new capabilities and add new services, including:

  • the Tellabs® 8660 Edge Switch
  • the Tellabs® 8611 Access Switch
  • the Tellabs® 8609 Access Switch.

The Tellabs® 8000 Intelligent Network Manager will help simplify provisioning of the network while bringing more visibility into network performance. Tellabs Professional Services, through collaboration with Agile Networks, will develop the network architecture, deliver detailed design packages, and integrate the components of the solution.

“Ohio will have the first network of its kind to provide metropolitan infrastructure to micropolitan communities,” said Kyle Quillen, CTO at Agile Networks. “The network will position Ohio as a leader in a state-wide broadband infrastructure, leveling a playing field for many communities that currently do not have reliable broadband services.”

CANTON – Agile Networks, a telecommunications services firm that engineers and operates carrier grade networks, has relocated its headquarters from Massillon to downtown Canton. The company now resides in the historic Northmark Building at 213 Market Avenue North.

“As our business continues to grow, we are very excited to transition to Canton,” said Kyle Quillen, Agile’s founder and chief technology officer. “Canton provides elements that will greatly support our growth. The city’s leadership and its strong business vision, direct access to the interstate and close proximity to the Canton Akron Airport make it a great town to do business.”

Agile designs, engineers and builds data networks for government and telecoms. The company focuses on building networks that reduce telecom costs for state and local government, and that can empower economic development through rural broadband initiatives.

“We’re pleased that Canton was chosen as Agile’s headquarters,” said Canton Mayor William J. Healy II. “It’s a testimony to our city’s versatility and business incentives that we’re able to attract businesses in the technology sector. We expect that Canton will be a great place for Agile to make things happen.”

Agile Networks designs, builds and operates carrier-class data networks for government, telecoms and industry. The company combines fiber infrastructure and 4G wireless technology to create data infrastructure for both public and private applications.
